Overview of Abstract Reasoning Tests

Abstract reasoning tests use diagrams, symbols or shapes instead of words or numbers. They involve identifying the underlying logic of a pattern and then determining the solution. Because they are visual questions and are independent of language and mathematical ability, they are considered to be an accurate indicator of your general intellectual ability as well as being ‘culturally fair’.

Questions tend to involve the repetition or change of the following:

• Shape

• Size

• Color

• Pattern

These questions use symbols arranged in a straight line or in a pattern and you are required to identify the missing symbol or the next in the sequence. You can expect to be given slightly longer for these questions than for verbal and numeric ability questions. Thirty minutes to complete 20 questions would be typical.
